Understanding weather related schedule changes for CCS

See the information below to help families understand how Cabarrus County Schools handles weather-related delays, closures, and remote learning days.
📅 Banked Hours (Built Into the Calendar and used for inclement weather schedule changes)
North Carolina law requires schools to provide 1,025 instructional hours each year. Our 2025–26 calendar included 1,045 hours of instruction, which allowed for 20 banked hours.
-
These banked hours can be used to cover delays, closures, or early dismissals.
-
When banked hours are used, schools are closed, and no makeup days are needed.
💻 Remote Learning Days (Asynchronous)
In addition to banked hours, state law allows districts to use up to five remote learning days instead of adding make-up days to the calendar. On a remote learning day:
-
Asynchronous remote learning means students work on their school assignments on their own time, not online with a teacher or classmates.
-
There are no live, virtual class sessions.
-
Teachers and staff are available by email or ParentSquare during the normal workday.
-
Attendance is counted when remote assignments are completed and submitted.
📌 Where to find assignments:
Once a remote learning day is announced, instructions will be posted prominently on each school’s website. Elementary students will use pre-planned materials already sent home.
📌 Technology or power issues?
If internet or power access is limited, students will have up to five school days after returning to complete remote assignments and be counted present.
🗓️ Make-Up Days
If both banked hours and the five allowable remote learning days are exhausted, additional weather closures would require in-person make-up days be added to the calendar.
📣 How you’ll be notified
Families will always receive updates through ParentSquare, the CCS website, social media, and local news outlets on whether the district is closed for students and staff, remote learning for students and staff, delayed, or will dismiss early.
Thank you for your flexibility and continued support as we work to keep students learning safely during inclement weather.
