RRES' Butch is CCS Principal of the Year
Tara Butch, principal of Rocky River Elementary School, has been named the 2024-25 Cabarrus County Schools Principal of the Year. This prestigious honor is part of the Principal of the Year program, sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Wells Fargo.
Superintendent Dr. John Kopicki, along with Chief Human Resources Officer Dr. Michael Williams, made the surprise announcement during the district's monthly principals meeting on Tuesday. They were joined by Ms. Butch's husband, Bret, and son, Brayden.
"I am truly humbled and grateful to be selected as the Cabarrus County Schools Principal of the Year," said Butch, who has led Rocky River since 2020. "This recognition is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our teachers, staff, students, and the entire school community. I am fortunate to work alongside such committed leaders in Cabarrus County Schools and continue to learn from them every day.
"It’s an honor to be part of a district that values leadership, collaboration, and excellence."
Since joining Rocky River Elementary, Ms. Butch has been instrumental in navigating the school through the COVID pandemic and has driven efforts to make it one of the top schools in the state. Her leadership has focused on ensuring every child has access to an excellent teacher. She also implemented the Smart Start Playbook, designed to equip students with essential skills for school success.
Under Ms. Butch's leadership, Rocky River has become a cornerstone of the community, establishing partnerships with local businesses, churches, and agencies to support families, including hosting regular events to provide healthy food options. The school has also been recognized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as a model for its use of Advanced Teaching Roles, which allow highly effective teachers to influence more students and mentor early-career educators.
"Principal Tara Butch exemplifies the dedication, passion, and leadership that inspire both students and staff to reach their full potential," said Dr. Kopicki. "Her commitment to excellence and her ability to build an inclusive, supportive school culture make her an outstanding leader in Cabarrus County Schools. We are proud to honor her as our Principal of the Year."
Ms. Butch began her career in Cabarrus County Schools in 2012 as an assistant principal at Harris Road Middle School after working as a teacher and administrator in neighboring districts. In 2016, she became principal of R. Brown McAllister Elementary School, where she served for four years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from Mount Union College in Ohio and a Master of School Administration from Gardner-Webb University.
Next, Ms. Butch will prepare her portfolio and participate in the interview process for the North Carolina Principal of the Year recognition, scheduled for November and December.
