CCS Names Beginning Teacher of the Year 09/03/2019

Congratulations to Stephanie Henderson, English teacher at Central Cabarrus High School, who has been selected as the 2019 Cabarrus County Schools Beginning Teacher of the Year in a program sponsored by the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT).

Henderson was surprised with an announcement during a Central Cabarrus High School staff meeting on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Henderson joined Cabarrus County Schools as a beginning teacher in August 2018. She is homegrown, having attended W.M. Irvin Elementary, Concord Middle School and Concord High School.  She graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in English Education.

Henderson’s classroom culture is one built on the principle of mutual respect.  She understands the needs of her students and creates an inclusive classroom environment in which students feel comfortable sharing ideas.  She integrates critical thinking into her lesson planning and classroom instruction.  Henderson’s classroom is inviting, and she builds positive relationships with her students.

During her short tenure as a beginning teacher, Henderson has served as the National Honor Society Chapter Advisor.  In addition, she started a pen-pal program between her high school students and local elementary students to help foster positive mentoring relationships.

According to Central Cabarrus High School Principal Dustin Shoe, “As a first-year teacher, Ms. Henderson excelled at creating nurturing, positive relationships with her students.  Throughout her English I and III courses, she provides opportunities for students to actively engage with texts and relate their personal experiences to literary content.  Because of her instructional approach and her ability to build relationships, Ms. Henderson has become an influential and valuable member of the CCHS staff and community.  She embodies the Viking spirit and proudly represents Central Cabarrus High School.”
