"It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but within ourselves." -William Shakespeare
Hello, I am Mrs. York, media coordinator at Northwest Cabarrus Middle School. I attended Capital University in Ohio, where I received a B.A. in Secondary Education-English. Twenty years ago, I chose to leave my home in Ohio and start the adventure of a lifetime by accepting a teaching position in Cabarrus County Schools.
This is my first year at Northwest Cabarrus Middle. I've spent the last 19 years at Concord Middle School, right across town. At CMS, I taught 7th grade ELA, coached cheerleading, directed Shakespearean plays, experienced the roles of Lead Teacher and Teacher of the Year, and tried to help our school in just about any way I could. I am looking forward to sharing my experience and helping staff and students here at Northwest.
In my spare time (ha!), I enjoy traveling. My husband (a teacher at Concord Middle) and I like to spend time with our families in Ohio and West Virginia, and at the beach. I have enjoyed visiting other countries all over the world, too, and hope to one day take my family to some of my favorite places! In addition to reading, my other interests include the theatre, shopping, dinner out with my friends, and - above all - playing with my little girls.
This year will mark my 5th year as a school library media coordinator. I really enjoy helping kids find "the JUST-RIGHT book" and watching them grow as literate learners, so the library is the perfect place for me.
My favorite book of all time is impossible to name - I've just liked too many!!!
I do have a few Favorite Books for Middle School:
Shiver series and The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
The Hate U Give and On the Come Up by Angie Thomas
Divergent series by Veronica Roth
Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass
Tears of a Tiger and Forged by Fire by Sharon Draper
Behind Me by Jacqueline Woodson
Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes
Crash and Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
Eragon series by Christopher Paolini
Refugee (and pretty much anything else) by Alan Gratz
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
While much has changed in my life during my years as an educator, one thing has remained constant: my passion for leading students to love reading, and my love for "my kids". I look forward to a year of new experiences, learning, and laughter at Northwest Middle!
