Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Kelly Burns

I am very excited to start another school year here at Cox Mill High School!  The 2016-2017 school year will be my seventh year as a Charger; before that, I taught at Concord High School for four years. I'm from Indiana and attended Indiana University, but I now consider North Carolina my home.  I earned my Master's degree from UNCC in English Literature. My husband, Greg, and I live in Charlotte and enjoy watching documentaries and exploring our neighborhood with our dog, Josie.  Some of my favorite books are Beloved, The Great Gatsby, The Sun Also Rises, and A Thousand Splendid Suns
I serve as English department chair and as a CMHS teacher leader.

Late work policy

  • Homework is generally due at the very start of the period.
The board will tell students to turn in the work, and I will also make a verbal announcement.
If a student wants to turn in homework after it is has been collected, that work will be counted as "late."
Standard classes:   Homework will be accepted one day after it is due for up to half credit (50%).
Honors classes/AP classes : No late homework will be accepted.
Late policy for projects or major papers:  Late work will receive a ten point  per day deduction.
  • TEAL Time:

Cox Mill has a  68 minute period called TEAL Time (Tutoring, Extracurricular, Academics, and Lunch). During this time period, students have the choice to see teachers on scheduled tutoring days to receive academic support, collaborate with other students on projects and assignments, engage in quiet study time, hold club meetings, and eat lunch. Likewise, teachers can also assign tutoring. This is an excellent opportunity for students to improve their academic success. The English department will offer tutoring during TEAL Time on the following days:

    Mondays – TEAL Block B – 12:16-12:50

    Thursdays – TEAL Block A – 11:37-12:11

    *TEAL time will start
