Bachelors in Music Education from Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University

Ms. Leslie Roberts

"Hello boys and girls!"
Thanks for checking out my webpage.
This is my 10th year as the music teacher at Weddington Hills Elementary School.
Did you know? I was a Weddington Hills Wildcat back in 1997-1998!!
I am a graduate of J.M. Robinson High School (2006) and Appalachian State University (2010)
In the 2019-2020 school year, I participated in the World View Global Music Fellows Program through the University of Chapel Hill.  I was able to collaborate with artists Abigail Washburn and Wu Fei to create lesson plans for the teacher toolkit that accompanied their album. I was fortunate enough to have one of my lesson plans (Exploring Body Percussion Through “Banjo Guzheng Pickin’ Girls”) to be selected for the Smithsonian Folkways lesson plan database as a result of this experience.
I can't wait to make wonderful music with you all!!

  • My philosophy!
We are fortunate at our school to have regular music classes. I strongly believe that music education is important for the WHOLE student. Music gives us confidence as it teaches us about discipline, teamwork, and cultural awareness.
My teaching style is a hybrid of different methods but I heavily lean into the Orff approach.
    What is Orff??

Orff is a teaching method I use regularly in the classroom.  Carl Orff was a composer and educator who believed that students learn through experience.  The Orff Approach uses a mixture of singing, dancing, acting and playing instruments (such as: xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, recorders…etc.).

    My goals are to:

    -  Help nurture an appreciation of music

    -  Perform in the school and surrounding community

    -  Build good character/discipline through working as an ensemble
