Degrees and Certifications:
Hello! My name is Emily Taylor and I am the music teacher at Bethel Elementary. I recently graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2019, and am currently in my first year of teaching. I student taught in Durham County, and received my Orff-Schulwerk Level 1 certification over the summer. Orff-Schulwerk is an elementary specific approach or philosophy of teaching music which encourages imitation and exploration among students to further their music education. The Orff-Schulwerk utilizes singing, moving, playing instruments, listening, creating, speaking and improvising to improve musical skills. I have attended many classes on methods of teaching elementary general music and am certified in writing and arranging full orchestrations for elementary music classes. My primary instrument is the flute which makes teaching the recorder much easier.
I currently live in Indian Trail where I went to high school. I was heavily involved in band all throughout middle school, high school, and college. I was a member of the Marching Tar Heels and played in many of the bands on campus including the wind ensemble, UNC flute choir, symphony band and UNC Charanga. I decided I wanted to be a band director when I was only in sixth grade, and devoted all my time to studying all aspects of music. I thought I wanted to be a band director all the way through college until I began student teaching. Once I started teaching part-time in the Fall I discovered being a band director just wasn't for me, but elementary general music was exactly what I had been looking for. I realized elementary music was so much more than just singing and there were so many possiblilties just waiting to happen! I decided to stick with elementary music in the Spring and never looked back! I now devote my time to discovering new ways to better teach elementary aged students.
