Dr. Jim Helf - Principal

I am originally from Western New York but have spent most of my adult life in the Charlotte area. I completed my undergraduate studies at SUNY-Cortland and my graduate studies at UNC Charlotte. I have a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. I have served as a classroom teacher at the elementary level and as an administrator across elementary and high school settings.

It is my honor and privilege to serve the students and families at Odell Primary. Our school has a rich tradition of partnering with the community and having a culture of educational excellence. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. I look forward to working with you.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve the Odell community as your assistant principal! I was born and raised in Virginia but have lived in North Carolina for the last nineteen years and have called Concord home for fifteen of those.

I received my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from James Madison University and taught in Henrico County Public Schools and Wake County Public Schools before coming to Cabarrus County. Over eighteen years of teaching I have taught every grade level but the majority of my experience has been in K-2. I am Nationally Board Certified in K-3 teaching and received my Master’s degree in School Administration from Appalachian State University.

I have two terrific sons, Zachary and Matthew.  Zach, 24, has high-functioning autism and lives with me. During the day he receives Community Living Supports from DDR Inc. Matt, 21, graduated from Western Carolina University in May where he majored in Communications/PR.  Zach has a special and lifelong fondness for all types of dragons and I feel blessed to be an Odell Dragon. I look forward to meeting all of the WROP family and serving you to the best of my ability!
