• Dr. Jim Helf - Principal

Welcome to a new school year at W.R. Odell! I am very excited and honored to be your Principal. I am originally from Western New York and have been in the field of education for more than15 years. I have a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Cortland, a master’s degree in curriculum and supervision from UNC Charlotte and my principal’s license from Winthrop University. I have also earned my doctorate in Educational Leadership from UNC Charlotte.

I began my career as a classroom teacher teaching both 2nd and 5th grade in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Since then, I have been an Assistant Principal at South Rowan High School in Rowan Salisbury Schools, an Assistant Principal at Wolf Meadow Elementary in CCS, and an Assistant Principal at W.R. Odell.

I am married and have three sons. My wife Shawnna, is an Associate Professor in the department of Curriculum and Instruction at Winthrop University. Nathan, my oldest son, is a sophomore at Indian Land High School, A.J. is a 4th grader at Odell, and Evan is a 3rd grader at Odell.

Ms. Lisa Ober - Assistant Principal
     Ms. Ober

I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve the Odell community as your new assistant principal! I was born and raised in Virginia but have lived in North Carolina for the last eighteen years and have called Concord home for fourteen of those.

I received my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from James Madison University and taught in Henrico County Public Schools and Wake County Public Schools before coming to Cabarrus County. Over eighteen years of teaching I have taught every grade level but the majority of my experience has been in K-2. I am Nationally Board Certified in K-3 teaching and received my Master’s degree in School Administration from Appalachian State University.

I have two terrific sons, Zachary and Matthew.  Zach, 23, has high-functioning autism and lives with me. During the day he receives Community Living Supports from DDR Inc. In August, Matt will turn 21 and will also begin his senior year at Western Carolina University where he majors in Communications/PR. Zach has a special and lifelong fondness for all types of dragons and I feel blessed to be an Odell Dragon. I look forward to meeting all of the WROP family and serving you to the best of my ability!
