How I became an English teacher...

I've been living and teaching English as a Second Language in the United States since 2006. I came to the US through a program called VIF (Visiting International Faculty) program. I am originally from Brazil. I started learning English when I was in 5th grade in public school in Brazil. It was not an easy thing because English is the only foreign language, we had access to and most teachers were unprepared to teach. Also, classrooms had about 40 students and English classes been twice a week about 50 minutes per class. My family was very poor and many times we barely had food on the table. My dad worked for a citrus company in town, father of 4, and mom was a house made, neither of them had the opportunity to go to school so my dad wanted the 4 children to have an education and have better jobs than the one he did. He worked for 30 years in the same job and he retired from the same company after that. I, just like my sister and my 2 brothers started working at a very early age. I started working when I was 11 and never stopped. I started learning English by myself borrowing books from the library and listening to The Beatles' songs. They were my first English teachers. After High School, I had no money to pay for college, despite my job. In Brazil you can go to school in the morning and work in the afternoon and in High School you can work during daytime and go to school at night from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm. I was blessed because three of my aunts got together and paid my 4 years of college and graduated in Languages and Literature. Meanwhile, I applied for a scholarship in the most prestigious English Institute in town. I graduated from both in the same year. Before my graduation, I was invited to teach in the Institute where I still studying. Next year another and even more prestigious Institute opened in town and I was invited not only to teach but also to be assistant principal. After that, many staff developments came and my first staff development abroad paid by Institute. 40 days in London for a course for English Teachers. After that, new opportunities, courses abroad that I paid my myself, USA, Argentina, England again, Scotland and so many others. Finally, I completed my Masters' Degree in International Education. During all this time, I could help my family to have a better life, top pay for my brothers' education, to pay for my sister's college, to support so many people in many ways. Now, I care so much about my students and I show them that everything is possible and life gives everyone opportunities and you cannot let these opportunities go by and it's through education that you can provide a better quality of life for you and others around you. Even if you in the end you don't think you will need it, in the words of my dad: " People can take away everything from you, but they will never be able to take away your knowledge and what you have learned in your life". This is my message for all my scholars. As a teacher, as an educator, as a friend.
