• Dr. Lowder A Message from Dr. Chris Lowder, Superintendent

We are quickly approaching the end of the first quarter, and before we know it, the holiday season will be upon us.

Our students and staff have started the school year strong with a myriad of classroom learning and enrichment opportunities. We also have enjoyed the kindness of new and established community partners who support our school system in a variety of ways. Saying ‘thank you’ hardly seems sufficient, be we are thankful and grateful for the support.

I’ve spent these first nine weeks of the school year hosting feedback sessions with school staff and the community. I have enjoyed hearing your thoughts about what’s working well in our district and what you see as the challenges. Your feedback and ideas will help shape some of my immediate priorities. We’ll wrap up the community feedback sessions in December. You can find the schedule for the remaining sessions on our district website.

In September, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a state budget. The budget includes continued funding for driver education classes. It also includes a pay raise for new teachers and a one-time bonus for other school staff. Most notably, the state budget removed a long-standing flexibility provision that allowed school districts to manage the staffing of teacher assistants.

This change, and its timing, will likely impact class sizes going forward since our district will not be able to hire more teachers (using the flexibility provision) to accommodate student growth. My Cabinet and I are working with our Board of Education to understand all of the impacts the legislature’s change will have and are developing solutions to address these issues.

On a happier note, we are celebrating our Principal of the Year and our Assistant Principal of the Year this month. Both of them are outstanding educators, administrators and professionals who are dedicated to student success.

As a reminder, you can stay up-to-date about our district news and events by visiting our website at www.cabarrus.k12.nc.us or our social media sites on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We hope you’ll follow us and help us share information about our district.

In closing, let me be among the first to wish you and your families the very best during the upcoming holiday season.

    With thanks and gratitude,

    Chris
