*We are one week away from a much needed break for everyone!  This Friday starts spring break, so the students will not have work to do asynchronously on Friday.  Enjoy your week and a day with your family!

*The school board changed the first day back Monday APRIL 12 to a WORKDAY.  Please remember that school resumes on April 13 (Tuesday) for everyone. NO SCHOOL MONDAY!

*Continue to practice sight words (popcorn words from the December packet and March packet) at home each day and have your child read each day to you!  Practice all of the Kindergarten sight words if your child has mastered the ones we sent home!  And for those that have mastered all of the Kindergarten sight words, you can practice spelling your sight words!

    What are we learning?

*Reading-  We are starting our last reading unit this week. In this unit we will use all of our strategies that we have learned to be better readers and to read more difficult texts. This unit works hand in hand with our phonics program to teach us how to read and write more challenging words.  This week we will look at the book My Five Senses.  We will also be taking our monthly iStation assessment on Thursday at the same time whether you are at home or at school.

*Letterland-  This week we will continue in our blending unit in letterland.  We will begin with r blends (frog, trap, truck) and then move to reviewing s, l and r blends before spring break. These are very tricky for most children to hear when they spell words and also to blend when they read.  We will work hard to recognize them!

*Math-  In this unit we will look at subitizing, comparing numbers, and seeing a number as a whole and parts that make up the whole.  We will also explore subtraction and go into word problems with both addition and subtraction.  This week will focus on how many more to make 10 and begin addition word problems.

*Science/Social Studies- This week we will start our next science unit on properties.  In this unit we will discuss what things are made of and how they feel.  This week we will talk about sorting (as a review) and then discuss sorting with texture, weight and temperature.

*Writing-   We are continuing to reinforce good sentence writing.  We are looking for capital and lowercase letters where it is appropriate, finger spacing between words, using their knowledge of letter sounds to spell words the best they can, and punctuation at the end of the sentence.  We are trying to get more creative with our sentence writing by coming up with a sentence to match a picture and by finishing a sentence starter.  Please allow your child to be creative and explore spelling on their own (even if it isn't perfect!).  They should be able to listen and hear all of the sounds in 3 letter words. They can do their best with longer words to hear sounds.

*Sight Words we have learned- to, the, a, be, I, see, in, it, and, is, are, you, for, he, on, his, look, not, go, no, my, like, me, she, we, said, go, can, do, out, when, play, was, am, some, time, with, our, us, get, will, at, up, down, an, or, little, day, yes, come, this, did, big, has, your, what, at, when

*Sound spellings we have learned- ck (and other pairs like gg, pp, ss, ll, ff, zz), ng (-ing), sh, th (voiced and unvoiced), ch, ou, wh, or, ve, er, ar, oo

*Word families we have learned- -ad, -et, -ap, -at, -an, -ig, -en

*We are learning to blend sounds together to make words with the letters that we have learned using the roller coaster method.

*We are learning to segment sounds to hear each letter in a word in order to spell it.
