North Carolina's Elementary Battle of the Books is an academic competition which encourages reading and exposes fourth and fifth graders to a variety of literary genres. The students are expected to read 15 pre-selected books, and will practice throughout the fall in preparation for the County Tournament, which takes place in February. It is set up as a quiz bowl, with students being asked questions about the books. For each question, the students must confer, and name the book that is being described by the question. The guidelines of the North Carolina School Library Media Association sponsored program specifies that each elementary school's team consists of no more than 12 fourth and fifth graders. At the 2019-20 county-wide competition our Cox Mill Elementary EBoB team placed 2nd out of 18 teams at the Cabarrus County Elementary Competition! We couldn't be prouder of their hard work and dedication! Way to go Comets!!!Now, we are gearing up for EBoB 2020-2021!In media classes at the beginning of the school year, fourth and fifth graders will receive an EBoB 2020-21 bookmark, hear about the books, and begin to check out EBoB books, if they think they would like to try out for the team in the fall. Students can prepare for the try-out by studying each book's author and title, as well as learning as much as they can about each book. It is not a requirement to have read all the books on the list prior to try-outs, but the more familiar students are with the details of each book, the more successful they are likely to be.
WE HAVE RECENTLY LEARNED THAT, WHILE THERE WILL NOT BE AN IN-PERSON EBoB COMPETITION THIS YEAR, THERE WILL BE A VIRTUAL COMPETITION. WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE, WE ARE MOVING FORWARD WITH TRYOUTS. PLEASE SEE THE INFORMATION BELOW TO JOIN THE EBoB CANVAS COURSE. ALL COMMUNICATION AND PARTICIPATION WILL TAKE PLACE THROUGH THE EBoB CANVAS COURSE.
Interested students MUST join the Canvas course, and will be asked to choose ONE time to try out: either Friday, November 20th at 10:00 am, OR Friday, November 20th at 2:00 pm. Tryouts will be held VIRTUALLY THROUGH THE CANVAS COURSE at both times. Students will be asked to join an MS Teams meeting to check in and get instructions, and will remain in the meeting until the test is over. THERE WILL BE A 30-MINUTE TIME LIMIT ONCE THE TRY-OUT BEGINS. On the Canvas course, there is a Google Form permission slip to fill out. NO STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO TRY OUT FOR THE TEAM WITHOUT HAVING TURNED IN A PERMISSION SLIP BEFOREHAND! Permission slips will be due November 19th.
