North Carolina's Elementary Battle of the Books is an academic competition which encourages reading and exposes fourth and fifth graders to a variety of literary genres. The students are expected to read 15 pre-selected books, and will practice throughout the fall in preparation for the County Tournament, which takes place in February. It is set up as a quiz bowl, with students being asked questions about the books. For each question, the students must confer, and name the book that is being described by the question. The guidelines of the North Carolina School Library Media Association sponsored program specifies that each elementary school's team consists of no more than 12 fourth and fifth graders. At the 2019-20 county-wide competition our Cox Mill Elementary EBoB team placed 2nd out of 18 teams at the Cabarrus County Elementary Competition! We couldn't be prouder of their hard work and dedication! Way to go Comets!!!Now, we are gearing up for EBoB 2020-2021!In media classes at the beginning of the school year, fourth and fifth graders will receive an EBoB 2020-21 bookmark, hear about the books, and begin to check out EBoB books, if they think they would like to try out for the team in the fall. Students can prepare for the try-out by studying each book's author and title, as well as learning as much as they can about each book. It is not a requirement to have read all the books on the list prior to try-outs, but the more familiar students are with the details of each book, the more successful they are likely to be.
AS I AM SURE YOU KNOW, SINCE SCHOOL LOOKS A LITTLE DIFFERENT RIGHT NOW, THE FUTURE OF EBoB IS UNCERTAIN. WE ARE PROCEEDING AS IF THERE WILL BE A COMPETITION, BUT PERMISSION SLIPS FOR THE TRYOUT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL WE LEARN WHETHER WE WILL BE IN SCHOOL OR VIRTUAL IN OCTOBER. FOR NOW, CONTINUE TO PREPARE FOR THE TRYOUT, AND I WILL GET MORE INFORMATION TO YOU AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE. THANK YOU!In the fall, interested students will be given a permission slip to try out for the team, and will be asked to choose ONE day to try out: either Monday, October 12th, OR Tuesday, October 13th. Tryouts will be held in the media center after school, from 3:00-3:45 on both days. NO STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO TRY OUT FOR THE TEAM WITHOUT HAVING TURNED IN A SIGNED PARENT PERMISSION SLIP BEFOREHAND! Permission slips will be due October 7th.If you need a downloadable permission slip you can print out, please click HERE.Students will be notified whether or not they have made the team by the end of October, and practices will begin after school on Monday, November 4th for the 12 members of the team.We are looking forward to another great season!*** Click HERE to download the EBoB book list for the 2020-21 school year.Mrs. Steiner, Mrs. A.
