Fundamentals & Foundations in Theatre
Course Description: This course is designed to be an introduction to the hard work that is involved in the magic of theatre. In this course, we will explore theatre history, terminology and concepts through an assortment of projects and activities. This class is highly participatory and involves teamwork, performances, projects, tests, quizzes, notebook checks, and some homework. All students are expected to come to class daily with a positive working attitude and a willingness to learn.
Audience Member Requirement: All students are required to see a live stage performance during the semester, submit proof of attendance (ticket stub or signed program) stapled to an analysis of the show’s acting, directing, set design, costume design, and light/sound design. The paper is due no later than two weeks after the show date. This show credit and paper will be factored into the FINAL grade for the class (1/3 of Final Exam). Performance opportunities are offered here at CCHS and other high schools, community, and professional theatres. Students may attend additional shows and write critiques for extra credit.
(Paper should be typed, 1 full page, double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman Font, 1” margins. 2 full pages, single-spaced, if handwritten.)
Class Rules, Policies and Procedures:
- There are two times in theatre: on time and early. Be in your seat
- and ready to work when the bell rings.
- Students are expected to bring their supplies to class: something to
- write with and write on, theatre binder, scripts, projects, etc.
- Theatre is a hands-on, apprenticeship art form. In the Theatre Arts classroom there are many activities that require active
- participation. Participation grades will be assessed daily. If a student chooses not to participate in the activity or comes to class unprepared, their grade will be affected and they may be given an alternative assignment that must be completed during class time for a grade.
- Theatre warm-ups, exercises and games require students to dress appropriately. Short skirts, constrictive clothing, or inappropriately revealing clothing (when arms are raised or student bends at the waist) will result in the student being unable to participate and an alternative assignment will be given.
- On performance days, the order of scenes/shows/presentations will be determined randomly. If you are not prepared to perform when your name is called, your performance is considered late and your grade adjusted accordingly.
- Students must read, understand and follow the CCHS Academic Integrity Policy (A copy is provided on the first day of year). Plagiarism (using someone else’s work as your own) & Cheating on class work, quizzes or tests will not be tolerated.
- Students must read, understand and follow the CCHS Technology Policy.
- Students are permitted to bring their own technology for use during class changes and lunch time. Students are permitted to use their personal technology (cell phone, iPod, iPad, laptops, etc) in Mrs. Kingaby’s classroom provided that items are used as directed by Mrs. Kingaby and in compliance with the CHHS BYOT policy.
- Students have access to the media center and technology labs during lunch and after school. There, they can type assignments, search for images, print, scan, and copy work for class projects for a small fee (10 cents a copy).
- Students will be given time in class to access technology (we frequently reserve the school’s laptops and iPads) and plenty of notice if they need to access technology independently. Last minute issues like “my printer ate my paper,” will not be accepted. Students should print early and have a backup plan. MAKE IT WORK!
- Occasionally, students will use media in their presentations and group work (music, YouTube videos, etc). Students are responsible for pre-screening the media to ensure that the material is school appropriate. Inappropriate selections will demonstrate irresponsibility. The presentation will be stopped and the grade adjusted accordingly.
- Students must use the technology provided in class responsibly. Accessing restricted sites online during class time—or working on assignments for other classes—will result in the loss of privileges and alternate assignments.
- Late Work/Missing Work:
- Students must be responsible for getting the information and directions they need in order to complete their assignments—when you miss something ask for it, do not make excuses. Ask a classmate, then ask Mrs. Kingaby.
- No late work (with the exception of missing class) will be accepted without prior arrangement with Mrs. Kingaby. Extra credit opportunities will be presented throughout the semester and alternative assignments may be given.
- If students will miss class for a planned, excused absence (i.e.: school activity), they must (within a reasonable time, prior to departure) request the missed work and bring the completed work when they return to class.
- If they are absent unexpectedly, it is their responsibility, to request the make-up work. They have 5 full school days to complete work. Work that has not been completed within the allotted time will receive zero credit.
- Students must follow all school rules.
- Students should be certain their behavior never detracts from instruction. Proper audience etiquette is required during performances and improper behavior will result in a reduction in participation grade. Sleeping in class is prohibited.
- Students should respect all people, at all times. This includes others’ belongings, personal space and ideas. Students should not use derogatory terminology, curse words or slurs against gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental capacity.
- The ML Barnes Theater space has been passed down to our care and keeping through the rich tradition of Theatre practice by the theatre artists who have come before us. Using the space is a privilege. Students should strike sets, props, costumes, and supplies completely after a project/production and should leave the space better than it was found.
- No food or drink, other than water in a clear container, will be allowed in the classroom or theater.
- Lighting and sound equipment, props, costumes, stage make-up, set pieces, tools, painting supplies or stage curtains require permission and training from Ms. Kingaby, the technical director or stage manager PRIOR to use.
- STUDENTS ARE ALWAYS EXPECTED TO GIVE THEIR BEST WORK. THIS SHOWS RESPECT TO THE TEACHER, CLASSMATES AND THE ART-FORM.
- Grading is subjective in the production of art. Students will be measured on personal effort and growth.
