• The new WR Odell Elementary School opened its doors to the public for the school's open house August 25th, and welcomed 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students for the first day of school on August 29th.  Other than being in a new facility, and learning where everything is located, the day was a typical first day of school.  Approximately 740 students are expected this first year.  Housing construction in the vicinity will surely cause the enrollment to increase.  The school's capacity is 938 students.  The school was built on the site of the former WR Odell Elementary (and WR Odell High School prior to that) at the corner of NC Hwy 73 and Odell School Road.
  • The new school has many new features including a Markerwall System in most classrooms.  This is two 12 ft. x 6 ft. marker boards on the teaching wall.  It allows about half the class to be at the marker board at the same time which also helps students be more attentive and engaged.
Additionally, much of the school has LED light fixtures and many daylight features which are intended to improve the indoor experience as well as save on energy costs.  The school has been officially recognized with the EPA's "Designed to Earn the Energy Star" designation.  As recognized by this award, Odell is on track to join a prestigious group of ENERGY STAR buildings that have saved more than $9 billion dollars in energy costs and prevented nearly 120 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from entering our atmosphere.  To be certified as ENERGY STAR, a building must meet strict energy performance standards set by the EPA.
