Welcome Back 2018-2019!
We are excited to begin the 2018-19 school year. Our STEM schools jumped right into action the first week. There were multiple PBLs taking place, collaborative and team-buliding strategies utilized, and introductory STEM activities completed! We are looking forward to a phenomenal year of learning, inquiry, and problem-solving!
The pictures below are just a few examples of the action from the first week!
On June 19th and 20th, 35 STEM Educators from our STEM schools were hosted by the City of Concord and Cabarrus County Soil and the Conservation District.
On Tuesday, we were able to tour the Coddle Creek Water Treatment facility where we learned "the story of our water" from experts who treat and protect the water we drink and use daily. We were also taught about the hazards our water faces from pollutants and human consumption. From there we visited the Alfred Brown Center for a catered lunch and information on waste water treatment and ground water protection. We gained valuable knowledge on how to be more eco-friendly and better stewards of our environment. This was a wonderful day and experience! Thank you Mandy Smith-Thompson and the City of Concord for this opportunity!
On Wednesday, Tammi-Sue Remsburg from Soil and Water, took us on a whirlwind tour of Brafford's Nursery, Propst Farms, Frank Liske Park, and the Cabarrus Hazardous Waste and Recycling facility. We learned about sustainable agriculture and cattle farming, park planning, and how to better protect our environment through the process of responsible recycling. There were so many STEM connections and opportunities for PBL provided! This was another amazing day!
City Nature Challenge 2018
STEM students from Cabarrus County particpated in the 2018 City Nature Challenge today, a global competition of nearly 70 cities worldwide, to see who can make the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people in a bioblitz focused on "Citizen Science". The challenge ends Monday, April 30th. If you would like to participate, download the iNaturalist app and start exploring, you can help Cabarrus County win this challenge!
