 History

Weddington Hills Elementary debuted on a cold Tuesday morning, November 10, 1996. It was the first new elementary school to open in Cabarrus County in 21 years and students stepped, not only into a new school, but into the computer age as well with shiny new computers in the classrooms and computer lab. The staff and parents worked hard to make opening day a success, even months before it opened. School administrators visited the home of every student and handed out school bumper stickers. The PTO organized fundraisers, selling school sweatshirts, which hundred of students and teachers wore opening day, Principal Roger Smith helped in the transition, as his own grown children video-taped his day. 1,070 enthusiastic students in grades K-5 greeted their new school with shouts of "Wow" and "Neat." There was plenty of enthusiasm from parents, students, and staff to go around!
